NEW FIRE TRUCK

The City only had a little tiny pickup size fire truck so we found a pretty good sized fire truck with low mileage and it was in good condition.  We told Mr. Holcomb about it and he said that he would match whatever we collected from donations and from what the La Salle County Commissioners would give us.  In the next City of Encinal Newsletter we had an article about giving donations for the fire truck.  A lot of individual people gave donations to the city for the fire truck.  After money from donations, the County and Mr. Holcomb, we finally got the truck.

The Fire Chief who sold us the truck said he would give us free training.  He came over to Encinal with the truck and showed us how to move the knobs to build up the pressure.  He took one cap off and Thomas, the newly appointed Encinal fire chief, said, “I’ll put it back on.” But he didn’t tighten it, he just put it on part way.  Then the Fire Chief pushed another button and it was building pressure inside. Thomas was still standing in front of the cap he had put back on.  Since it wasn’t fully tightened, it blew out the cap, hitting Thomas in the stomach. He went “Ffuuhh” and he fell on his back, Boomp.  He lifted up his knees, saying, “Ahhh.”   It knocked the air out of him and he said, “Ah, it feels like a mule kicked me in the stomach.”

The Fire Chief turned off the pressure right away.  He said, “What happened?”  “That cap flew off.”  “Oh, I guess he didn’t put it back on tight.”  The Fire Chief said, “You got to tighten those things real well, real tight because it builds up a lot of pressure inside.”  Thomas had just turned it a few times.  But after awhile he got up, he’s a tough guy.
