TRAIL DRIVE

Reprint from the Tejas News, March 1979, owned by John & Pat Harvey

Ever since I was very young, there were many trail drives coming right down the highways leading into Encinal.  Little kids would come running saying, they’re having a trail drive.  Let’s go, we’d run out there.  We’d stand on the side of the railroad tracks or we’d climb up on top of the fence because no cattle would go that way.  There would be like ten cowboys on the trail drive bringing the cows down that Burkholder Road from one of the ranches.  The cowboys would be moving the cattle around.

The Indian Becar would be dressed in a blue jean shirt and jeans, leather chaps, riding a black horse. His last name was Yanez.   When he took his hat off, his hair would fly in the wind and he’d look like an Indian. They said he was an Indian.
