WHAT'S HAPPENING AT 4AM

The fire chief told me one time, “We need to get up early to see what’s really going on in the city.  We need to get up at 4 in the morning and go give our rounds, ride around town. That’s how you catch people by surprise.”  I thought doing what at that hour but I said, “Okay, let’s do it.” So we got up at 3:30 and I took a thermos of coffee and picked up Tomas at 4am. He was waiting.  Okay, let’s go ride around.

We rode around and everybody was asleep. All of the people in the houses were asleep.  There was one truck that stopped and picked up some guys, they were obviously workers, maybe going out to a ranch.  So the fire chief says, “There you go, see.  Follow them.”   I followed them.  It was a pickup truck and there were some guys in the back of the pickup truck.  When my Grandfather was picking up workers to go out to the ranches that was the usual time to take off.  The truck went south past the post office towards Laredo.  I turned back there to go back into town.

He said, “See, you wouldn’t have known that.”  I said, “Yes, that’s right, I wouldn’t have known that they go to work that early.”  I didn't know what good that did, but anyway.  No, we didn’t find anything else.  We drank the coffee in the thermos.
